🍀 The Art of Chinese Raw Rice Paper

Chinese raw rice paper (生宣, Shēngxuān) is celebrated for its exceptional ink absorption, allowing brushstrokes to breathe and flow naturally. Among the finest varieties, 檀皮宣 (Tánpí Xuān) is crafted with a blend of 青檀树皮 (the blue sandalwood tree bark), producing a soft texture that enhances ink layering and depth. 麻笺 (Májiān), a paper known for its long fibers, offers remarkable durability and resilience, making it ideal for both bold strokes and delicate washes.

In our link, starting from the medium-level option, all the paper types were made from 檀皮 (the blue sandalwood tree bark), and the premium options are hand-made, preserving the organic, irregular texture that interacts beautifully with ink, creating unpredictable yet harmonious effects.

Our only smaller paper option belongs to the category of “pure bark” or “clean bark”, 净皮 (jìng pí). It refers to paper made exclusively from the inner bark of the blue sandalwood tree, without mixing other materials like straw or wood pulp. This results in very fine, smooth, and durable paper. • It is completely normal when the paper meets water the surface shrinks a little bit. You can hand mount these papers or iron on low heat to flatten the sheets after the painting is finished 
• Raw paper absorbs ink, the ink lines can be seen immediately from the back side – Great effects, but hard to control for a beginner
